On Becoming a Home Based Call Center Agent

I met her when I picked up my partner from the airport. We decided to shop a few items from Duty Free before proceeding home. She is the sister of my partner’s colleague. Since she used to be a call center agent, we got talk so easily. During the course of our conversation, she mentioned that she is currently preparing for her marriage and just quit her home based call center job.


Huh? “Your home based call center job?

How did I miss that?

I thought it was a scam. But it was true. There is such a legitimate home based call center job. How did I know? I actually worked for that company after that conversation. They don’t have an office here. It is US based and you get to be interviewed thru skype. When I got the job, they downloaded a software on my computer over the Internet. That software is where I logged in and out each day, and where I get to view customer’s details when they or I call them. It’s an inbound and outbound program for a salary lending company. All the staff, including my boss, are also logged in on a chatroom while working for any help or support needed. I get to receive my salary thru Unionbank cyber account.

You would think it’s the kind of job you would want especially if you have a family to look after to. A home based call center job requires no transportation expenses, no time wasted commuting to and from work, no dress codes, and most of all, no boss around, no politics and minimal policies are enforced. Your boss is just a face on facebook and a chatmate.
Home based call center job did not work for me.
I quit after 4 months.
I got so bored. Imagine working alone at night for eight hours. 
I miss the life outside. The traffic, the noise, and the challenges that comes with office-bound job.

    Hi! First, you will need a high speed and stable Internet connection. Second, you will need to download skype (most interviews are done on skype). And third,get a headset. If you want a call center job for short term contracts, go to Odesk.com. You will find a lot of jobs available and urgently needed for home based and free lancers. Call center agents are paid between 2-10 dollars per hour. But for starters, you will receive as low as $1 per hour, and as you gain enough experience on Odesk, you will be qualified for as high as $10 per hour. Goodluck!!!!!

    Most home-based jobs are online. I know a lot of jobs that are home-based that doesn't involve phone support. But you have to have Internet connection and your own computer. Let me know if you need more information.

    Hi, I checked all the call center companies that you have listed but apparently one must be residing either in the US or Canada to be aligible in the positions available, my question is..how do i go about the process? Do i just provide an add in US or Canada? or should I look for something else that hires somebody in the Philippines?

    Thanks for such an enlightening blog. From your experience, it's very encouraging that filipino bpo agents can have equal opportunties of working directly with us-based outsourcing companies. I've been working in a home based virtual call center here for more that a year now. Although,we also handle US accounts but i'm very eager to apply directly with us-based companies as they offer better compensation package to support my family.     HI Sybill! i just read your blog and like everyone else, i really prefer to work at home specially now that i already have a baby. I'm actually an experienced call center agent for almost 4 yrs, from 2 different reputable bpo companies here in manila as both csr and tsr. I honestly got tired taking calls and doing same exact things every day plus of course the agony of long travel, imagine leaving your house 2 or 3 hrs before your shift just to get to work on time everyday... and you probably know how it feels to push your self to do something you know you're tired of doing! :) but i dint really decide to quit until i got pregnant.
    Currently, I really want to help my husband in our financial needs but at the same time i also want to personally take care of our daughter.
    I tried to visit the bpo companies you listed which offer home based jobs but i think you need to be either US or Canadian resident to be eligible, right? If not, do you mind sharing me what the right process is to apply? or if you'd rather, can you help me find other home based jobs other than being a phone support, like perhaps data entry clerk or typist. I had general transcription job experience previously by the way, but i only had it for a few months since it was just a part time one. So i'm really hoping you can help me.     Hi Sybill.. just gave birth to my 1st child 2 months ago. ive been working in the bpo industry for 5 years. i tried oDesk. so far, i have active candidacies and receiving invites from oDesk clients.     I have been working from home for a year now and I just got promoted to team leader. The pay is $5 per hour, but I started at $2.5 per hour. I found my employer through Odesk, but be very careful only apply to guaranteed payment and make sure you do not stray away from Odesk.     Home based work there is plenty about but operating a call center myself I can see a lot of people going "off" the idea. This is primarily down to BAD AGENTS. Not saying people are all bad but I can run 10 agents costing me $30 a day in dialing yet I put 10 home based agents on dialing they didn't get through $50 in 2 months!!

    Why? Unreliable, they sleep, they don't do a full shift. They are easily distracted with family life. Yes its a good job but at the same time people need to be aware its a JOB not a hobby.
